Island Šolta, Central Dalmatia - Top sights and holiday destinations

The island of Šolta

Even though Šolta is not as well known as its neighbors Brač or Hvar, the island is still worth a visit. The pebble beaches, surrounded by shady forests, are the ideal choice for families with children, but also for adventurers who want to explore the island's many coves. Most of the apartments and rooms are located near the beach. Book your accommodation on Šolta and make the most of your vacation on this island, known as an oasis of peace.

The small island of Šolta is just waiting for you to explore its many quiet coves. You'll also encounter traces of the Roman past and be quite surprised when, among the many old stone houses, you suddenly come across an unusual Baroque castle. Become one with Šolta, taste the delicious olive oil, and join in the local fishing festivals.

The island of Šolta reveals its past in traces on stone

Visitors to the island of Šolta are welcomed in the harbor of the small town of Rogač. The remains of ancient Roman buildings lie in Banje Bay. The church of Grohote, the largest and oldest town on the island, is decorated with 14th-century frescoes. The same town also houses the island's largest church, St. Stephen's.

In Gornje Selo, you will recognize typical Mediterranean architecture. The remains of an ancient castle with two towers are also located there.

An unusual combination of traditional Dalmatian houses and the Baroque castle of the Marchi family from 1706 awaits guests in Maslinica. This bay is surrounded by an archipelago of seven islands. On the largest of these, Stipanska, are the remains of a 6th-century church.

Šolta – The unexplored island of olives and figs

An old Greek saying – Nesos Olynthia – refers to Šolta as the island of unripe figs. Seemingly endless vineyards and numerous olive trees adorn the island. Their fruit was once transported by trabakule – an ancient type of sailing ship. Today, the ships are used for tourist excursions.

Emperor Diocletian discovered Šolta's natural wealth as early as the 4th century. The remains of his fishpond can be found under the sea in Piškeri Bay.

Šolta invites visitors to explore secluded coves or stroll through the Mediterranean forest, which leads to the island's highest point, Vela Straža (237 m). The untouched nature hides a secret of this small island – an owl, whose calls can sometimes be heard in the silence of the night.

A summer of funny legends and local flavors

The island's most popular summer event – the Mrdula Tug of War – celebrates the legend of the dispute between the islands of Šolta and Brač over who owns the small island of Mrduja. This friendly dispute culminates in a festival in the beautiful Stomorska Bay.

Even the smallest villages on Šolta come alive with numerous fishing festivals. In the summer, concerts take place in Necujam, which has developed into a modern tourist destination in recent years.

Presentations of indigenous products and works of art by local artists also feature in the summer events. In addition to the high-quality olive oil, visitors also love the famous Šolta honey, which is enriched with rosemary.
