Krk island
Krk island is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Croatia. As many as fourteen of its beaches boast the Blue Flag of cleanliness. The opulent layers of history are a matching attraction, among which stands out the connection with the origins of the Croatian written word.
The island's history is at least as old as the Homeric epics. It has been home to tribes of Croats since the seventh century. The folk festival of Stomorin, held on Ascension day to the sounds of the traditional woodwind instrument sopile, is a showcase of Krk's ancientry.
Seeing and tasting Krk
The Viennese aristocracy turned Krk into a tourist Mecca as early as the nineteenth century. Malinska developed into a favorite destination. Lovers of cultural monuments will likewise be impressed by the Lapidarium in Omišalj, the castle of local magnate family Frankopan in Krk town, as well as the oldest Croatian written monument, the Baška slab, held at Jurandvor.
The island's other specificities include Europe's largest griffon vulture reservation, Biserujka cave, steeped in pirate lore, and the wining wonder – the Žlahtina of Vrbnik. Many factors go into making Krk an ideal destination for the visitor wishing for pleasure experienced with all the senses.
Krk, the active island
Krk welcomes the lovers of an active vacation to more than 200 miles of its well-maintained biking and trekking paths. Additional spice can be added to your holiday by wakeboarding, kneeboarding, water-skiing and other extreme watersports, which are part of Krk's attractions.
